Luxury is defined as "something that contributes to pleasure or comfort, but not absolutely necessary."

When candles were first invented over 5,000 years ago, they fulfilled a basic need for light and heat. But today, the ubiquity of incandescent, fluorescent, and LEDs has made the original purpose of candles all but obsolete. Nowadays, most people like to buy candles for three main reasons: decor, atmosphere and aromatherapy.

While modern candles are a luxury in that sense, not all candles are luxury candles. If you're wondering what makes a true luxury candle, here are some features that set them apart from regular household candles.

1 The smell

A luscious, specially formulated blend of fragrance oils provides the intoxicating aromas that entice and attract people into a luxurious scented candle.

General store candles usually come with one or two base scents, making them overwhelming and one-dimensional are. By comparison, luxury candles contain a symphony of scents, balancing a combination of top, middle, and bottom notes that harmonize with each other to create a full-bodied fragrance experience.

2. The laundry

Great wax makes great candles. The type of wax that fills the container determines how long a candle lasts and the way the fragrance is released.

Most candles use paraffin, the cheapest type of wax. While paraffin is good at retaining fragrance and color, it tends to create soot when it burns. It is also not very environmentally friendly, as paraffin is a non-degradable by-product of petroleum.

Luxury candles tend to use more expensive alternatives to paraffin, such as coconut wax, beeswax, and soy wax. For example, every luxury scented candle at Esenimo is made from natural soy wax, which burns less quickly than paraffin and allows you to enjoy the atmosphere and aroma for up to 50% longer. Soy wax is also a wonderful scent carrier that doesn't need any chemical enhancers to give your candle a strong, balanced scent.

3. De age

Candle wicks may seem like a humble, insignificant piece of a candle, but the choice of wick makes a huge difference in the way a candle burns and fills a room with fragrance.

With a luxurious scented candle, you can you can expect a clean burn at a constant, moderate temperature that gives you the perfect, hassle-free experience. The right wick makes all of that possible.

The thickness of the wick, the material composition and the way it is braided (or not) are all carefully designed to suit the size of the luxury scented candle, the type of wax and each specific blend of fragrances.

4. From container

The holder is the "face" of a luxury scented candle.

Unlike the common, mass-produced types of candles, a luxury candle is designed to be as much a treat to our eyes as it is to our to be noses. The material, colour, weight and design all play a part in creating a holistic sensory experience that tells a multifaceted story.

Each luxury candle brand has its own approach to container design; some have interesting geometric shapes, while others use sturdy, high-quality materials.

At Esentimo, we spent months carefully choosing the perfect candle glasses to create a look and handfeel that pays homage to the classic and elegant style.

5. The packaging

Packaging also plays an important role in distinguishing luxury candles, especially when presented as a meaningful and memorable gift for loved ones.

Companies invest a significant amount of time, effort and money in making purposeful, high-quality packaging that lays out a proverbial red carpet for the luxury candle inside.

The colors, shapes, materials and narrative elements come together to create a memorable brand first impression and help build of anticipation of what is to come.
