What is a natural scented candle?

A natural scented candle is a candle made with only natural ingredients. Look for a 100% soy wax or beeswax candle with a natural scent or essential oils and a sustainable wood or 100% cotton wick.

What is the healthiest type of scented candle?

Is the candle you burn poisonous? Natural waxes such as soy, canola, coconut and beeswax all burn clean. Look carefully at the ingredients before you buy. To avoid introducing contaminants into your home that could be harmful to your health, do not burn candles made with:

Paraffin wax - which is made from petroleum.

Wicks with a metal core - which can disperse heavy metal particles into the air.

Some candles use a mixture of waxes, so check that all the waxes used are natural or if only the main wax is natural and others are not. For example, a soy wax blend will contain a high percentage of soy wax, but may also contain paraffin wax.

What is the most environmentally friendly scented candle?

Candle packaging and the environment

Many candles are packaged in single-use plastic packaging, but this almost always ends up in our seas or landfill. Make sure your candle is packaged without plastic.

Check whether the glass container is made from recycled or reused glass. And once you've finished burning your natural scented candle, reuse or reuse the candle jar as a plant pot or to grow your own herbs, etc. Don't let your jar end up in landfill!

The scent

Make sure your candle scent doesn't contain chemical nasties like synthetic colors or artificial fragrances.

Candle wax

Almost any kind of oil can be converted into a wax. There are 3 main types of candle wax, paraffin, soy and beeswax. Other types of candle wax are coconut and rapeseed.

Paraffin

Many scented candles are made from paraffin, a by-product of petroleum. The wax is treated and used to make various things, including candles. Paraffin waxes can produce strong odors.

However, many experts believe that burning paraffin candles releases air pollutants known as toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Beeswax

Beeswax comes naturally from bees and is the oldest type of candle wax, dating all the way back to the ancient Egyptians. These naturally scented candles are very healthy to burn as they are smoke and soot free. Some reports state that they can also help clear the air.

However, beeswax is not often used for scented candles because its natural scent doesn't mix easily with other scents. A beeswax candle has a wonderful honey aroma when burned. So scented candle makers will often mix a different type of candle wax, such as coconut, that holds the scent well.
